She was born in Mercy Hospital, New Orleans as Howard Allen O'Brien, named after her father. She changed the name into Anne at her first day of school and has kept it since. In July of 1956 her mother died, and after her father's remarriage they moved to Richardson, Texas in 1958. It was there, at Richardson High School, in journalism class, where she met her later husband, Stan Rice. They finally married on October 14th 1961 in Texas, shortly after moving to San Francisco to settle in Haight-Ashbury. She earned her BA in 1964 at the San Francisco State University (in Political Science and in Creative Writing). Her daughter Michele was born September 21st of 1966, but died of leukemia on August 5th, 1972. This loss nearly drove Anne into alcoholism, but 1973 she managed to turn "Interview With The Vampire" into a novel in a five week period. When she submitted it, it as at first rejected, but finally was published in 1976. Her second child, son Christopher, was born on March 11th, 1979. She continued to write in various forms, moved back to New Orleans in 1989 (1239 First Street in the Garden District), and since then several of her fiction has been transfered to either the big screen or made into TV-serials, and her books have become famous among vampire fans all over the world.
