Summary:
Hercules (Reg Park) attempts to save his love, Deianira (Leonora Ruffo), who has lost her mind and no longer recognises him. The oracle Medea (Gaia Germani) tells Hercules that he must retrieve a golden apple from the Land of Hesperides which will, in turn, open the gates of Hades itself, where he then must retrieve a sacred stone in order to finally save Deianira. Hercules, with two companions, Theseus (Giorgio Ardisson) and Telemachus (Franco Giacobini), embarks on the dangerous quest for the stone, while Licos, (Christopher Lee) posing as a concerned uncle, intends to sacrifice Hercules' lover in order to attain immortality.
Note:
- This sword-and-sandal film is Mario Bava's first work in colour, improvised with leftover props from earlier Cinecitta productions. - Neither the English nor the Italian language version feature British born bodybuilder Reg Park (three-time Mr. Universe - 1951, 1958, and 1965 - and the man who trained Arnold Schwarzenegger) and Christopher Lee's own voices. It was the result of the Italian film industry's penchant for filming without audio and dubbing all the voices later. Sometimes actors were available for the filming but not available for the dubbing. - The U.S. cut removed quite a bit of footage, re-dubbed major script points, and had a different opening sequence.
