Summary: Lon Chaney Jr., known for his portrayals of the Wolf Man and Frankenstein's Monster, dons a black cape as Count Alucard (that's Dracula spelled backwards), the bloodthirsty son of the famous Transylvanian vampire. When Katherine (Louise Allbritton), a beautiful Southern girl obsessed with the thoughts of eternal life, invites the Count to come to her mansion in the U.S., she unleashes a Pandora's box of horror on unsuspecting relatives and neighbors. Despite the heroic efforts of Frank (Robert Paige), her fiance, Katherine becomes a disciple of the evil Count. Together they both set out to satisfy their unquenchable thirst for human blood with nocturnal killings in director Robert Siodmak's excursion into the horror genre.
Note: - The third in Universal's "Dracula" series, following Dracula (1931) and Dracula's Daughter (1936).
- With "Son of Dracula" Lon Chaney Jr. completed the circle of having portrayed each of Universal's four main monsters (The Wolfman, Frankenstein's Monster, The Mummy, Dracula).
- Bela Lugosi was interested in the role, but as Chaney was the horror star du jour at Universal at the time, he got the role.
- For years there have been questions about the real identity of the title character. Despite the obvious evidence of the film's title, some claim that the character is not Dracula's son but Dracula himself. In the film itself Dr. Lazlo states that the vampire Count who arrived at Dark Oaks (who's name spelled backwards is Dracula) is probably a "descendent" of the original Dracula.
- The film introduces several firsts into cinematic vampire lore. It is the first picture to show the transformation from vampire to bat, where a vampire has no reflection in a mirror and the first (of many) for the Count to disguise himself as Alucard.
