Summary: Four sisters live together in a French seaside chateau under the belief that they are centuries-old vampires. When young doctor Thomas and his friends, Marc and Brigitte, arrive to help the sisters, it turns out that the girls are in fact vampires, controlled by the sword wielding vampire queen (Jacqueline Sieger).
Note: - This was the first feature length film from director Jean Rollin, who specialized in arty, erotic, and gory films about vampires. The cast and crew of the production were primarily friends of Rollin, and more than half of the film (even the soundtrack ) was improvised.
- Originally shot as a thirty-minute short film, and supposed to be the extension of the American horror film "Dead Men Walk", which distributor Jean Lavie, a good friend of Rollin, had bought, and which was deemed to be too short to be shown in the cinemas. Producer Sam Selsky then proposed to expand it to feature length, knowing that it was preferable to have a complete feature in hand rather than a short. Furthermore, distributor Lavie was broke at that particular moment, and the 30 minute film might never have seen the light of day. Thus, a second part was added, entitled "La Reine Des Vampires" ("The Queen Of The Vampires"), and, for its release, the film was subtitled "A Melodrama In Two Parts".
- When released, the film had a terrible reception (people were rioting), because it had no common point with the Hammer vampire films they were used to.
